Modern & Abstract Art

Increasingly fascinated with the stylised and unusual composition offered by abstract, modern and contemporary art, Andrew has sought to create his own take on an 'alternative presentation' of subjects and reality, combining his experience with graphic design and his trademark photorealistic painting style.

“Red Mist With A Screw Loose (Portrait Of An Angry Man)”, 40.6cm x 50.8cm, Oil On Canvas

Inspired by a Picasso portrait of man painted in 1969, Red Mist With A Screw Loose (Portrait Of An Angry Man) is painted in the bold colours of 1980's architectural detailing, with the textures carefully chosen to give a precise look to the portrait rather than one painted in haste. The subject's bright blue eyes, salt and pepper coloured hair, burning red glow when challenged provided the look and palette of colours for the portrait. The yellow outline of the face is based on the shape of an upper case letter 'R'.

“Horse Under Blossom Tree”, 60.9cm x 45.7cm, Oil On Canvas

Again inspired by the simple bold lines of a Picasso portrait, this painting shows the silhouette of a horse grazing in a field beneath a cherry blossom tree with poppies and daffodils at the edges. Created with a sweeping set of black lines with brightly coloured infills, it has an almost logo-like feel to it, vaguely reminiscent of Superman's 'S' symbol. Finished in the manner of a car manufacturer's emblem with it's three dimensional surface and glistening metallic colours, it is mounted on a two tone beige and sky blue panel representing the earth and the sky.

“Vandalised Roadsign”, Oil On...er, Roadsign

As a rider it was difficult not to drive past the Ridden Horses road sign and not eventually think it looked like the horse and rider had been cut out or erased from the image, as though they were something that had been banished from the world in a scene from a science fiction program, leaving their only trace as a black outline! So it seemed only right to paint them back in! Painted in oils on a real road sign.

“The Butterflies Of Weissach”, 42.0cm x 32.0cm x 16.0cm, Relief/Diorama

"On April 1st 2017, researchers studying the flora and fauna around the municipality of Weissach, in the district of Böblingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, noticed unusual adaptations in the pattern formations of butterflies in the surrounding area. Whilst butterflies can often be drawn to roads due to their thermal properties, (roads often being warmer than the surrounding area), or in search of sodium and other minerals in damp areas of roads after rainfall, these butterflies appeared to be drawn to the racing activities of the nearby sports car manufacturer, Porsche. The researchers observed the new colourful wing patterns emerging bore an uncanny resemblance to Porsche's famous and historc racing liveries. A suggested theory as to why this change had occurred was the butterflies proximity to the these racing cars as they were being tested and the visual stimuli these striking car liveries had repeatedly presented. Over a period of many years it had influenced their evolution as the butterflies had understood these liveries to be the sign of a stronger, winning presence and they had aligned themselves with these values. You couldn't make this up... Well, perhaps you can."

This highly detailed relief/diorama of a section of road adorned with beautiful butterflies featuring Porsche's famous and historic racing liveries on their wings has been produced to a lifesize scale of 1:1. Made in a manner reminiscent of Hollywood film props from plastic, rubber and eposxy resin with paper butterflies.
